Something New Every Day (SNED)
My uncle says, sometimes a little to cheerfully, “Life is always full… just not always of what you want.”
Dory says, “Just keep swimmin, just keep swimmin…”.
Yoda says, “There is no try, only do.”
My mantra in 2016 was “less planning; more doing” but now it’s July 2017 and my battle cry is SNED!
A key to my sanity is doing something new or interesting everyday. Not always something big. Usually not super exciting but something. Anything. I’m not good at consistency so lets see how long I do it and share it!
Why?
Months ago life was normally busy and I was writing 2,000+ words a day, living in Germany, making serious tracks toward my aspirations as a writer. Things were no were no where near calm or organized but I was in a steady trajectory forward.
(Living a fantastically, dystopian life as an Army Wife, the Daughter of an amazingly talented artist, and the Mother of two terrific adult girls surfing the perils of chronic illness, dating, college, full time employment and post-high school life in general utopian dreams are hysterical farces. *Dear Grammar Nazi’s please feel free to correct my commas and convention errors as compelled- I’ve decided to do minimum proofing in my “Something New Every Day” posts but please note that Mother, Wife, Daughter are intentionally capitalized.)
Creativity thrives in chaos so the universe sent an unexpected gift in the form of a very aggressive cancer striking my mother with sudden medical meyhem. We went to the emergency room for what we expected to be a routine visit that shouldn’t wait until Monday and a few days later she and I were loaded on a medical evacuation flight from Germany to Maryland.
Flying on a C-17 is an interesting adventure. The most notable points are that it’s really loud, there are no windows, no seat back tv’s, and you get to walk around and even sleep on the floor if the jump seats are uncomfortable. I highly recommend the experience but maybe not as a medical evacuation because of the whole medical part.
(As of today we in the third month of enjoying the comforts of the Bethesda Navy Lodge and Mom is half way through her first cycle of chemotherapy. My senior year of high school I decided to join the Army and she never fully understood that choice. I don’t like getting up early, running, or following directions and I grew up an only child so I never ever had to share a room… 23 years later the reason for my enlistment is clear- preparation for spending three months in a hotel room with my mommy.)
Responsibilities and reality won’t let me escape into the rabbit hole of my writing or set my own schedule right now but it’s key to mom’s health and min that we keep moving, keep creating, keep swimming.
I analyze everything so why not share my wonderful life through opinionated reviews?
Honestly, this could fade away by the end of summer or go on for a year but you can’t end something you don’t start.
“Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.” -paraphrased from Geothe’s Faust (read a little history of quote here at ThoughtCo.)
Keep reading my SNED Reviews!
UPDATE: 10 days later I’m still doing new things and posting about them. Thanks to the twenty or so people who are reading!
