2021: Authors, Analog, and here’s what we’ve been reading! 📚
Dear Reader,
And so the next quarter of 2021 has begun!
So far, this year hasn’t quite been the fresh ray of hope we all wanted it to be, but there’s at least a glimmer of the light at the end of the tunnel in the form of the vaccine (we have a breakdown of vaccines by our author Aaradhana Natarajan’s coming up soon, too!).
As we write this editorial, we can’t help but think of how excited we were last year to finally see Snipette in print — and more than a little nervous about how we’d get it shipped out in the midst of a pandemic. Fortunately, the postal service opened up, and with a bit of support from our authors we managed to get them through and into our readers’ hands!
This year gave us a lot more time (and more editors) which takes off the constant “edit pressure” we were feeling, and giving us the space to initiate new ideas like our January webinar. We’ve been more involved on social media too, including a rather fun feature called “our editors bookshelf”: each week on Instagram, we highlight a book we’re currently enjoying or loved in the past. We love how this allows us to both catalogue what we’re reading, and share our favourite books with all of you.
One particularly fun event was our recent author meetup. (Somehow we managed to find a time that allowed for all our various time zones!) We chatted with Paul, author of many fantastic articles including A Tether to Space, and Thuận, whom all our webinar attendees will remember. We spent a fun hour and a half chatting about books, Snipette, world cultures and (surprisingly) a wild variety of cabbages!
We also tried out a new feature this quarter: our author Zia Steele’s 20-minute long scientific treatises on fictional settings — like ‘what’s the physics behind the flight of a dragon?’. This time, he’s written for us about teleportation — how it works, and whether we’ll get destroyed in the process. If you like it, let us know, he’ll be back with more interesting topics in the near future.
Till then, stay safe, and happy reading!
