To all sneaker fans, Happy Nike Air Max Day 2019! In honor of this event, Snupps will acquaint you with the history of the Nike Air Max and future brand releases.

The story begins in 1987, when designer Tinker Hatfield, inspired by the George Pompidou Centre, created first Air Max. Indeed, the George Pompidou Centre, located in Paris, recalls the design of the original Nike Air Max — with its red stairs and glass tubes. Hatfield wanted to make a new shoe that was both a fashionable and practical. Hatfield’s concept pushed Nike into a new era, as his ideas were completely different from the designs of the company at that time.

In 1989, the Air Max Light — aka the Air Max 2 — was released. It weighed less than the original, achieved by replacing the forefoot polyurethane midsole with one made of EVA foam.

The new Air Max 3 was released in 1990, also called Air Max 90. The new Air Max adopted all features of the first versions, resulting in excellent cushioning and flexibility. The original colorway of white/black/cool grey with infrared was chosen to exaggerate the thickness of the sole air cushion.

The most famous Air Max sneakers are the Air Max Big Windows, released in 1991. Commonly known as Air Max Classic, these are still one of Nike’s best selling shoes. This Air Max Classics have been heavily popularized in hip-hop culture.

In 1995, a new series of Air Max was designed by Sergio Lozano. Inspired by the human anatomy, the spine of the shoe resembles the human spine and the materials are intended to represent skin, ribs and tendons. The Air Max 95 was the first pair in the line to utilize two air cushions in the forefoot and used air pressure technology to fit the curvature of the wearer’s forefoot. Since then, Nike has released 3 versions of the Air Max 95, bringing new designs, colors and improved product quality.
