Comic books rose to popularity in the 1930s. Superheroes like Spiderman and WonderWoman have become mainstream in the modern era, thanks to high budget movies and TV show spinoffs. Here are some rare issue comic books that may have been gathering dust — and value — in your attic for years.

Amazing Fantasy #15

This 1962 comic book is the first to feature Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s iconic character, Spiderman. The publisher’s of Amazing Fantasy were wholly underwhelmed by Spiderman, only publishing because him because it was the series’ last issue. Little did they know, Spiderman would morph into a multimillion franchise. The web slinging superhero is so popular, a first edition of this comic sold to a private collector for $1.1 million in 2011.

Detective Comics #27

Batman leapt onto the scene in 1939 in the 27th issue of Detective Comics. Experts believe between 100 and 200 copies of the original comic book still survive today. Extremely rare, a Detective Comics #27 in good condition sold in an online bid for $1 million in 2010.

Action Comics #252

Another rare book from the Golden Age of Comics, Action Comics #252 introduced Supergirl in May 1959. In 2017, when the Supergirl TV series was released, a copy sold for $16,500.

Archie Comics

Due to the popularity of the CW’s Riverdale series, there has been a renewed interest in Archie Comics. The characters of Archie, Betty and Jughead first debuted in Pep Comics #22 in 1941. After gaining popularity, Archie Comics became its own series in the winter of 1942.

In 2017 a first edition of Pep Comics #22 sold at auction for $252,100. The record sale for an Archie Comics #1 is $167,000.

The Walking Dead

Another comic book series made popular by television was The Walking Dead. These comics are from the modern age, but The Walking Dead #1 from October 2003 sold for $20,000. In addition to Issue #1, Issue #100 — the first appearance of Negan — has a high appraisal value.
