So Digital — An Introduction

Created by Tajshmon Brook, Clay Dixon, Simi Famakinwa, Sarah Harkins, and Haydn Harris, the purpose of this publication is to ultimately discuss what it means to be digital.

We now live in a world full of screens. Our phones, tablets, laptops, and smart televisions all give us basically unlimited access to a world of technology. The addition of devices like these has altered our lives in multiple aspects, but specifically our social way of life.

Social media, for example, has greatly altered the way people communicate. Apps like FaceTime allow users to video chat from virtually anywhere. Instagram allows users to share snippets of their lives in the form of photos. YouTube is a medium created for the sharing of videos. However, the rise of these types of media has created a rise in issues such as copyright. What exactly are users allowed to share on these platforms? This affects the participatory culture that we try so hard to be apart of.

More recent topics of interest in the digital world include virtual reality and Ludology. New worlds are becoming unlocked with the introduction of devices such as the Oculus Rift. Users can now be placed in games or experiences from their own home. However, rather than virtually waiting in line to ride Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland, virtual reality has the ability to allow users to create their own pirates and their own Caribbean. The addition of virtual reality into our society betters our creative process and the ability for self-expression.

Ludology, on the other hand, is interested in the study of games apart from stories. Tetris, a game with no plot or storyline, has become dated as gamers now crave a story when playing a game. Stories make us more human, while games cater to our animalistic side. Put the two together, and what more do you need?

What about the future? The cyborg and post human discussion can be a bit scary to think about. Ultimately, we as human beings desire more technology in every aspect of our lives — including the social portion. By gradually blurring the line between human and technology, conversations could eventually be transmitted by simply touching another person. However, it is important to understand that this change will not occur overnight (no, you will not wake up tomorrow part robot.)

This publication will further investigate how each of these topics have affected us as humans and the social aspect of our lives. Welcome to (Social + Digital = ) So Digital.
