When we encounter a problem, 91 percent of smartphone owners (most of us) turn to YouTube on their phones to solve the problem and complete various tasks. We’re not making this up, Google reported it.

This experience of hitting a wall and then turning to your smartphone for a video of the solution doesn’t exist in most companies today. Most companies are still struggling with allowing access to YouTube (and for good reason!).

You can create a YouTube-like experience in your company! Here’s how…

There are 3 phases to get you ready for this YouTube experience. The time and effort required varies according your employee demographic, company size, technical capacity, among other factors we can explore another time.

Phase 1: Get a video sharing platform (plug for Soaq right about………..now!) and build a business case. Don’t invest too much too soon because it’s just phase 1. Limit your spending to a free solution (second Soaq plug right……here) to pilot. Get your best content creators to upload video — marketers, trainers and communications personnel, or it can be your sales and service people. These folks may likely already have videos they can share — have them upload this content! If you’re short on content, consider hosting a challenge.

Phase 2: This is the “integration” phase — encourage growth of your brand spankin’ new video platform within the organization. There are a bunch of ways to do this: start to embed links to videos in other systems such as your LMS, your intranet or CMS, your social sharing platforms, etc. Promote sharing of video between peers, departments, regions, and more. Establish your leaders as trendsetters in the creation of fresh video content!

Phase 3: This is what we call the floodgates! Yes, at this point, open the rights to publishing to all employees. If you’re hesitant about it, use a moderator to approve content before it gets published. Here’s where you may learn that most employees won’t want to tarnish their personal brand and the quality of content may surprise you.

Video is here, it’s fresh and exciting. Keep it smart.
