Increase your photography revenue by following the latest in drone photography

In the first entry of this two-part blog post, we’ll have a look at current photography trends and how they apply to drone photography. By following these latest trends, drone photographers can take photos that buyers want.

Every year visual experts from top photo agencies identify the most popular visual trends in photography. Drone photographers can take advantage of these trends and provide clients with today’s most relevant and trendy photos. Below, we’ve listed some the commercial photography trends for 2019 that are likely to have an impact on commercial drone imagery.

Colour

Colour has always been a unique part in commercial photography. For 2019, the colour destined to dominate the design industry is ‘Living coral’, also known as Pantone 16–1546. Described as “buoyant, vibrant and effervescent”, the marine tone was chosen by the Pantone colour matching system for communicating strength and individuality for brands and individuals alike. Additionally, social media, blogs and marketing communications are expected to use brighter and louder colours to get the attention from theirs users.

Nature photography

Nature travel been recognised as an important photography trend for 2019. This is in line with a growing responsibility among consumers to protect nature and travel in a more environmentally friendly way as well as a trend to visit remote and hard-to-reach destinations on the planet. Nature travel photography shows these destinations on travel blogs, news sites and magazines to promote them, oftentimes using marketing language to promote a sense of well-being and spirituality, as this is a way to connect humans and nature.

More than ever, nature is seen as a place where one can connect with nature and disconnect from work and technology. On the one hand, we see the built environment becoming more and more connected through technology, whereas nature is used as a space to escape from this non-stop connectivity. Nature photography that shows the environment in a “pure” and unspoiled state satisfies a spiritual need among travellers.

Aesthetics

Photography makes uses of other art forms to create an element of recognition. Just like a painting, a photograph can display a clear subject in a visually attractive way. For 2019, specialists expect to see many commercial photos that use minimalism to make viewers stop and think about the effect of the composition, or look for new and unexpected elements.

An element of visual intrigue can focus your audience’s attention

With regards to drone imagery, it’s likely we’ll see more drone images showing a single subject rather than many small ones combined. Images that show patterns have always been popular among drone photo users. What makes them so special is not the isolated objects, but their repeated underlying spatial patterns. These are often found in the built environment, but can also happen “by accident”, for example when groups of people and animals display the same behaviour in space (think of massive sports events such as marathons). Drone images that show repeated spatial patterns in combination with different colours can evoke a hypnotic effect that enhances their attractiveness.
