Meet Darren Smith, Soar’s Geospatial Specialist!
Each fortnight we’ve decided to provide a feature interview with a member of the Soar team, including a fun video segment called “Soar in 60 Seconds”. This fortnight’s spotlight is on Darren Smith, our Geospatial Specialist for Soar.
Tell us a bit about your background — where are you from and what did you study?
I’m originally from San Diego, California. I studied Geology at Uni, then worked for a while, and recently I studied surveying.
What made you want to be a Surveyor?
Growing up in California, we spent a lot of time in the Sierra Nevada mountains. I naturally wanted to know how the mountains came to be. Later in life, I started to survey lakes and ponds using autonomous boats. This made me want to study surveying.
Why did you join Soar?
I joined Soar because I have an interest in geospatial applications (mapping) and the tools used to create maps (drones).
What are you responsible for at Soar?
I’m do marketing for Soar. For now, I work with data providers such as drone operators and aerial companies. I promote Soar and it’s capabilities to them as a platform for selling their geospatial products.
What excites you the most about what Soar is doing?
There does not seem to be any limits for what we hope to do in terms of remote sensing. Going from very high-resolution drone images to images with a large aerial extent as is sourced from satellites.
Where do you see Soar in 2 years?
In three years Soar will be the default platform for drone operators looking to sell their geospatial images and services. It will become a virtual one-stop-shop for them in terms of mapping. Likewise, for aerial and satellite images, Soar will be an industry leader in terms of the diversity of market offerings and platforms. You will be able to source multiple types of aerial and satellite images as well as use Soar as the primary vehicle to drive your sales as a satellite or aerial company.
About Soar: Soar is on a mission to become the one-stop-shop for the collection, distribution, and monetization of mapping imagery from different sensors — thereby positioning itself to become the leading platform and marketplace for global mapping needs. By integrating imagery feeds from satellite, aerial sensors and drone content, Soar is building the world’s first living super-map.
