Just Accept It!
The Role of Acceptance in Recovery, the Path to Peace
The journey to recovery is like walking through a mountainous landscape, full of peaks and valleys, ascents and descents. It’s a path paved with courage, resilience, and acceptance. For many, acceptance is the cornerstone of their recovery process. Yet acceptance is often misunderstood, seen as an agreement or of condoning of other’s behavior (or our own). In reality, acceptance is just an acknowledgement of the facts, a recognition of what is, and a stepping stone towards healing and inner peace.
Acceptance: A Misunderstood Virtue
In the program of Alcoholics Anonymous, acceptance is often veiled in misconception. Many mistake it as a passive agreement or a resignation to the way things are. In reality, acceptance is far from condoning or embracing our destructive behaviors. It’s about recognizing them as a part of our journey, a part of our story. It’s about acknowledging our past without judgment, understanding that our mistakes do not define us, and learning that we can turn our adversitity into an asset.
