There has been a number of carnivals this year since Trinidad Carnival Road March 2019, and of course soca music has continued to be released left and right — it’s what fuels the carnival.

Everyone knows if you are West Indian you must have a cousin or family member in New York. Labor Day is New York City’s Road March and like any iteration of Trinidad Carnival, it’s history is unique.

Labor Day Carnival actually started in Harlem in the late 1940’s, later relocating in the early 1970’s to its current home, Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, NY. The annual parade is currently organized by the West Indian American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA).

Labor Day Parade is Monday September 2, 2019. Will you be in New York City for Labor Day?

Ready to catch up on your soca?

In no particular order, here are three (3) soca mixes from my personal playlist that I suggest you give a listen to:

1. Soca Bacchanal 9 — DJ Lovaboi

(2hrs 22mins)

This mix is bound to bring you up to speed with the latest soca songs. Within the first 30 seconds of the mix Lovaboi was able to perfectly mash up approximately 17 soca songs. This soca mix is DJ Lovaboi’s longest mixes, arguably one of his best by far. Listening to this mix is a must, and pay attention to how he transitions not only from song to song, but from lyric to lyric — telling a story.

I was able to catch up with Lovaboi, I wanted insight on the motivation behind this dope mix, he said:

“Soca music is my passion, I believe when it’s mixed well anyone can listen to it” -DJ Lovaboi

2. Soca Starter Crop Over Edition 2019 — DJ Private Ryan

(1hr 12mins)

This mix is intended to catch you up with the latest soca songs coming out of Barbados for Crop Over 2019. It was released quite close to Crop Over Grand Kadooment Day, however it stands as a skillfully mashup of the songs we soca lovers need to be familiar with.

The artists coming out of Barbados have been putting out some sweet soca music. It is really commendable when DJs like DJ private Ryan dedicate a mix to The unique sound coming from a particular island.

3. Vincy Soca Take Over — DJ JEL

(1hr 52mins)

This soca mix is intended to catch you up with the latest soca songs coming out of St. Vincent and the Grenadines for their 2019 Road March. It was released after DJ Jel released Vincy Soca Sampler, a mix arguably just as dope as this one. This mix however mix starts out with an exclusive dubplate by Spielberg of “Come in She Country.

The artists coming out of St. Vincent and the Grenadines continue to release unique soca music, and once again it is commendable when DJs like DJ Jel dedicate mixes to the music coming from a particular island in time for their carnival celebration.

Which one of these mixes do you like most?
