The Mental Health Stigma & It’s System

Why aren’t we talking about depression & suicide at school? It is hushed in the classrooms. Why is there such a stigma around mental health?

Well mental health has been a subject that is kept inside and doesn’t get any education, attention, or anything else but viewed as a taboo subject and labeled towards victims of the stigma of mental health and mental illness as lunatics and other labels.

But recently this year, we’ve been told by news that New York is the first to have mental health education included in elementary, middle and high schools which I believe will begin in September 2018! Which I am one of many people who’s grateful and glad we’ve made this kind of progress. To also making more progress and change in our world to help educate others in school on the mental health subject. But yet this does think about those who’ve already graduated from high school and missed out on mental health education.

Though this may be in some way a missed opportunity that comes to circumstances but we have to keep in mind aside from losing out on getting educated on mental health in school, we still have access to libraries and programs at colleges and universities that offer education on the brain, mental health and wellbeing for careers like:

  • Mental health counselling
  • Mental health psychology: psychologist
  • And more…

We need to bring down the barriers surrounding mental health and talk about how we’re really feeling, not just what we show on social media, in our pictures or over text. We need to deeply connect.
