Did you know that there are two statues of the editor of a leading anti-slavery newspaper in New York City?

How about the building that housed the newspaper known as New York’s Picture Newspaper until 1995?

Our brand new group of students are marking the end of the first week of orientation with a scavenger hunt that will send them out in search of a variety of clues like the two above. The hunt also asks them to experiment with a few new tools and talk with regular city dwellers and the ubiquitous tourists about how they use social media and what frustrates them about the news.

You can follow along using the hashtag #newmarkj19 on Twitter as they post pictures what they find — and meet some of the fresh faces getting ready to change journalism.

The hunt runs from 1 to 5pm Eastern time today, Friday, August 17, 2018. After that, we picnic!

We would love for you interact with them, share encouragement and thoughts!

If you want to see the clues, you can follow along here. (Clues designed by Associate Dean Andrew Mendelson with help from Social Journalism Director Carrie Brown and Director of Education at the Tow-Knight Center Entrepreneurial Journalism, Jeremy Caplan)
