The pandemic hasn’t stopped Newmark J-School at CUNY students from engaging communities this summer

Zee Ngema, Editorial Intern at OkayAfrica

Zee Ngema will be joining OkayAfrica as an editorial intern. She will be working with both the New York and South African teams to write and share stories pertaining to music, art, politics and culture from around Africa and the diaspora. She will be working remotely from Beverly, Massachusetts and New York City, NY.

Michaela Román, Engagement Producer Intern at THE CITY

Michaela Román will be joining THE CITY as an engagement intern to help with the Coronavirus tracker project, social media, and service reporting for New Yorkers. She will be helping respond to readers’ concerns and questions and assisting with virtual open newsroom planning. She will be working remotely from El Paso, Texas.

Jake Wasserman, Engagement Fellow at Mountain State Spotlight

Jake Wasserman will be the engagement fellow at a new West Virginia non-profit investigative newsroom, Mountain State Spotlight. He’ll be working to help the newsroom better listen to their audience and community through crowdsourcing projects related to social and political issues across West Virginia. Jake will be working remotely due to COVID-19.

Rawan Yaghi, Audience Development Intern at Slate, Brooklyn, NY

Rawan is going to work on a number of projects with the strategy and social media teams of Slate this summer. She will write social media copy in collaboration with editors, promote new podcasts, assist in the promotion of major editorial projects, and analyze audience engagement data. Rawan will be working remotely due to COVID-19.

Victoria Jonas, Production Remote Program Team, PBS American Portrait + RADICALMEDIA

Victoria will be working on a national crowdsourcing project asking people to share their stories in their own ways for the PBS American Portrait Project. She will do outreach to gather footage, photographs, and self-recorded videos, and compile and edit reels. Victoria will be working remotely due to COVID-19.

Frank DiFiore, Intern, THE CITY’s MISSING THEM Project

Frank DiFiore will be participating in THE CITY’s COVID-19 “MISSING THEM” project that seeks to track and memorialize all of the New Yorkers who lost their lives due to COVID-19. This will involve investigative work, verification, crowdsourcing, and reaching out to friends and family members affected by loss during the pandemic.

Allison Dikanovic, Engagement reporting fellow, Wisconsin Watch

Allison will be helping launch and develop a new texting news service and local engagement platform in Milwaukee called News414. She’ll work on answering questions that people text in, reporting out more in-depth accountability stories that build off of reader questions, and finding new ways to engage, partner with and involve community members in the reporting process to make sure as many people as possible have access to the information they need to get through this crisis. She’ll be working from a safe distance in Milwaukee.

Madeline Faber, Audience intern, Philadelphia Inquirer

Madeline will join the audience team at the Philadelphia Inquirer as an audience engagement editor for the summer. She will distribute the local publication’s journalism on social media and in its suite of newsletters. She will analyze digital analytics to promote content that performs well and meets the information needs of The Inquirer’s audience.

Karla Arroyo, Junior Editor (Intern), Kulture Hub

Karla will be interning with the Kulture Hub team this summer as a junior editor. She will be creating written content for the website as well as content for their social media channels. She will also be sharpening up her editing, basic HTML and SEO skills. Her work will also consist of helping the KH team launch a new podcast. She’ll be staying up to date with the latest news in urban and millennial culture in order to best serve KH’s audience. As a bonus, she will also be learning the business side of creative journalism which includes budget pitching, budget spending, and curating treatments for any editorial piece that is accompanied by visuals. Karla will be working safely from her balcony, overlooking some of the Manhattan skyline.

Kayla Boone, Engagement Intern, Washington City Paper

Kayla will be working with the team at the Washington City Paper as an engagement intern. She will be working on the newsletter as well as pitching and writing stories with an audience engagement component. She will be working remotely from Queens, NY.

Terrence Fraser, Digital Production Intern, VICE

Terrence will be working with VICE Digital as the Digital Production Intern. He will assist VICE producers by researching stories and characters, planning video shoots and supporting editing and post-production.

John Philp, Social Journalism Intern, Retro Report

John will be working alongside CUNY alum Isadora Varejão at Retro Report, a documentary news organization dedicated to reexamining the news after headlines fade.

John will be doing data analysis, community listening and engagement reporting to help Retro Report better understand its audience. In addition, John will help build a new project targeted at an education audience, beyond Retro Report’s traditional base of news consumers.

Skanda Kadirgamar, Data Reporting Intern, Reveal

Skanda is helping a documentary team at Reveal research food and water scarcity along with their implications for national security.
