Since Facebook is the most widely used social network (70% of internet users are Facebook users), it seems to be -as a rule- the perfect tool for adressing your digital audience. But, is Facebook the right tool for you?

Most probably it is. Or at least it is one of them, or a complementary one. Anyway, knowing the demographics of the tools you use can help you get to a wider audience, predict your audience’s behaviour, etc., which is why here I bring some figures on Facebook demographics. (Source: Pew Research Center, Business Insider, 2015)

1.4 billion active users

  • User breakdown: 53% female, 47% male
  • 66% of online men and 76% of online women are on Facebook
  • There are 83 million fake profiles (WOW)
  • Of all online adults, by age group: 18–29: 87%, 30–49: 73%, 50–64:63%, 65+: 56%
  • Of all online adults, by education: High school: 70%; Some college: 71%; College degree: 74%

Key Takeaways:

  • Marketers can effectively reach both genders on Facebook
  • People with more education are slightly more likely to be on Facebook
  • People under the age of 49 are more likely to be on Facebook; however, the amount of users age 50+ is increasing

Taking into account the information presented above, should Facebook be your priority? Overall, Facebook should be your priority if any of the following apply:

  • Your target audience encompasses a broad demographic (all ages, international, etc.)
  • Your audience is primarily adults over 65, teens, or women
  • You want to be able to interact and engage with your audience (not just post announcements)

Hope this ideas are useful for you! Feel free to comment and/or ask.

Note: I’d like to share an article of a case study in South Asia that illustrates the power of Facebook today. Mind blowing! Must read!
