How will social media will look in the next year or two?

For me, 2013 offered us a pretty good idea: our digital social world is going micro. On all levels: geo (e.g. NEXTDOOR), interaction time (e.g. SNAPCHAT) etc.

And I think this trend will explode in the next year or so. There are a number of reasons this will happen, but in my mind, two of them rise above all others:
1. The “big community” players are already well established and they pretty much control the social space. As it seems crowded already, I don’t see any big shifts or surprises in the next year or two.
2. There’s a huge amount of data to be gathered on the micro level. Harvesting all this micro-level data (wether it’s about your body, your hour-by-hour habits, or anything else you can think of and beyond) is going to be the next big thing. And this is going beyond the social platforms. Sensors embedded in all kinds of wearables (or non-wearables gadgets) will provide a tremendous amount of data.

So to conclude: from my point of view, 2014 is the year we’ll start looking at the world through the magnifying glass. Or maybe should I say “looked at”?
