  1. The first social media site, Six Degrees, was introduced to the public in 1997.

I had no idea that social media sites started over 20 years ago! It seems to me that many are still becoming acclimated to the idea of meeting people online.

Netflix was also establish in 1997 (although it was nothing like the great Netflix we all know and love today). Some great things just need time to become popular.

2. A lot of people are still signing up for social media platforms — I mean A LOT.

According to Dave Chaffey in Global Social Media Research Summary 2019, “… the number of people using the top social media platform in each country has increased by almost 1 million new users every day during the past 12 months — that’s more than 11 new users every second.”

I personally would have thought that the growth in users would have been slowing down by now considering it has been almost 8 years since Snapchat (the youngest of the popular social media sites) was released.

3. When it comes to mobile Facebook users throughout the world, most of them access via Android devices.

With the growing popularity of Apple devices, I did not expect such a disparity between the number of Apple and Android users.

76.2% access via Android devices while only 15.5% access via an Apple device. The other 8.3% are using something else…

4. 100 million hours of video content is watched on Facebook every day.

How could 100 million hours a day not surprise you???

— And I thought I spent too much time watching random Facebook videos.

5. The average video only retains 37% of viewers.

I would have expected this percentage to be slightly higher; however, considering the new addition of advertisements in everything on social media, it makes sense.

— I think we all feel this way about ads during videos.
