Here at Optimize Social Media we make it our business (literally) to be on the forefront of all things that are new in social media and to always be the go-to for questions about any and all platforms.

The most common questions we get are usually, “What is ___, and what do people normally use it for?” This seems like a simple question, but then we realized it is a deep rooted, complex question with many answers. To answer that question we had to look at our own experiences first — after all, we learn best from them right? So in this instance we asked ourselves: What is Twitter, and how do I use it?

We asked our social media managers how they would describe Twitter.

Here are their answers:

“Twitter is giving your opinion in 140* characters or less.”

*Twitter now allows 280 characters

“Twitter is for live broadcast info in simple sentences or graphics.”

“Twitter is a social media platform that I use to complain about my life.”

“I use it to get “life” updates on friends, family and celebrities in real time.”

“It’s a way to interact with people online, but in a simple, straightforward way. It’s like a Facebook wall that everyone can see.”

“Twitter is a platform that allows people to interact with people and brands in a conversational kind of way.”

“Twitter is where I go if I have random thoughts that I think would be fun to share with strangers.”

“I use Twitter to stalk celebrities and live tweet TV shows or Vikings games.”

“A microblog derived from one massive, shared, inside joke.”

“A great way to connect with people in your circle and also people around the world.”

“Twitter is a platform for a social media influencer to post and share real time information — if you’re not an influencer nobody cares.”

“I use Twitter during live award shows to see what everyone is thinking.”

“Twitter is a fast paced expression platform. You can tweet multiple times a day without being annoying.”

“A platform that you can say what you’re thinking 24–7.”

“I think Twitter is great for following celebrities, politicians and events. Also great if you have a niche you are interested in.”

“A platform you can be open and careless on, mostly PG-13 and up.”

“A platform where you can say whatever you want all the time — quantity over quality.”

“Twitter is a place to explain funny moments, share memes and know when the next Yeezy drop is.”
