WordPress 4.6 is expected to be released about August 16th, 2016. Most of the new features are “under the hood”. Although these features may not be obvious, you still need to be aware of them.

System Fonts

This affects the admin area only, but depending on your browser, may have a different look and feel.

WIIFY? There is no longer a reliance on third party fonts and will decrease your page load times. This change relates to the admin area only, not the content area.

  • Segoe UI for Windows
  • Roboto for Android and Chrome O/S
  • apple-system for Safari and Firefox on macOS and iOS

Shiny Updates

You’ll no longer see a progress screen when you upload a new plugin or theme.

WIIFY? less distraction when updating or developing a WordPress site.

Editor Improvements

Several changes have been made to TinyMCE ( native text editor )

  • improve the autosave function
  • Highlight broken links

WIIFY? A lot of content creators use a third party editor to create content, so this feature upgrade may be too little too late.

Not so Obvious

Comments are Now Reliably Cached

Just what it says, comment caching has been improved.

WIIFY? Increases your site speed ( Google likes that )

Security Enhancement — Non-logged-in Users

Until now, WordPress checks for rules for users ( admin, contributor, and subscriber) but not for non-logged in users.

WIIFY? Increased site security

Email Sent to New Users

The email send to new users will now be worded so users understand changing their password is not required.

WIIFY? Users less likely to change password ( usually less secure than the assigned password)
