“Meet the Social Misfits Squad” is our ongoing interview series where we sit down with members of the Misfits family to chat about their work, passions and backgrounds.

This week, we caught up with, arguably, the most creative member of our squad, Felicity Hamilton, who’s been with us since September. Felicity is Social Misfits’ Junior Designer, meaning that she’s the gatekeeper of the Social Misfits brand as well as handling the creative needs of our clients. She’s a self-confessed workaholic and has had design clients from the age of 19!

What’s a typical day at SMM for you?

A typical day for me involves a lot of tea, a lot of post-it notes and constantly fighting the giant plant that lives on my desk for space. Other than those daily pillars, my days are very changeable. I can be doing anything from working on our own branding presence, to working on campaign assets, to animating a clip.

What’s the most surprising thing you’ve found from working at SMM?

The most surprising thing probably is how collaborative my job is. As the only designer in the team it’s great to have everyone’s input and work with different members of the team on different clients to find the best design solutions for them.

What’s the one piece of advice you’d give our clients?

Try and be creative with your socials! Don’t be scared to test out ideas. If you’ve seen something you love on your own personal feed, could that work for your org? Be playful, current and don’t be afraid to borrow ideas and adapt them to fit your brand!

What purpose-led campaign in recent years has resonated with you most?

The thing that comes to mind is Italian Vogue’s January 2020 issue replaced photography and replaced it with illustration. The primary reason for this was sustainability, as they saved on production costs and also the carbon footprint of making the magazine was reduced. All the money saved was donated to a museum damaged in floods worsened in recent years by climate change. What resonated with me the most about this was the use of designers and illustrators to tangibly make progress towards fighting climate change. It’s great to see publications and business’ thinking creatively and looking for solutions that are seemingly quite challenging to the status quo to tackle worldwide problems.

Personally, what’s your favourite social media platform & why?

Pinterest. I just find it a really positive and inspiring space. I made a conscious choice a few years back instead of scrolling through Instagram, I’d scroll through Pinterest. It gives me so many ideas and it boosts my mood! I have 138 boards! — a stat I’m pretty proud of. They’re pretty far reaching by this point with my weirdest board being titled ‘hay-fever’ which our junior community manager Rorie said I should mention haha. It’s more aesthetically pleasing than it sounds — sort of yellow rapeseed fields and dandelions.

What’s the last TV show you’ve binged?

The last TV show I binged was Cheer on Netflix. Half of the show is cheerleading politics and really brutal injuries. The other half is watching them in the library trying to mend their Toshiba laptops. If that doesn’t sell it to you, I don’t know what will.

What 4 pieces of pop culture would you take with you to a desert island? (1 x film, 1 x tv series, 1 x album, 1 x book)

FILM: Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy. Entertaining, Informative for my new life at sea and very very long… I think this will be perfect.

TV SERIES: Killing Eve. I just love this show so much. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a genius. Plus Villanelle has a killer wardrobe for me to ogle at (see what I did there).

ALBUM: Brothers In Arms — Dire Straits. It’ll remind me of my family and it will also add even more dramatic value to being stranded on an island.

BOOK: Everything I know about love, Dolly Alderton. Such a comforting and relatable book to keep me sane and grounded.

We’d like to thank Felicity for her time. Please feel free to connect with Felicity on her LinkedIn profile. Next week, we’ll be talking to our Senior Manager, Hannah Brennan!
