“Meet the Social Misfits Squad” is our ongoing interview series where we sit down with members of the Misfits family to chat about their work, passions and backgrounds.

This week, we caught up with one of the longest serving members of our squad, Hannah Brennan, who’s been with us for 4 years. As Social Misfits’ Senior Manager, Hannah is responsible for the day to day management of our Community Management team. Hannah has been working in the comms industry for over 6 years, and also co-founded a sustainable fashion platform, Not My Style, which informed consumers on the transparency of their favourite fashion brands.

What’s a typical day at SMM for you?

I manage our team of Community Managers and oversee our portfolio of Community Management clients, so a typical day for me will involve catching up with the Community Managers, checking in with our clients, talking to prospective clients, working on a client strategy, amongst other things! No two days are ever the same at Social Misfits which is something I love — although every day will start with a coffee.

What’s the most surprising thing you’ve found from working at SMM?

I was SMM’s second employee (I’ve been here for almost 4 years now) so the most surprising and great thing for me is to see how quickly we’ve grown, yet how close knit we’ve remained.

What’s the one piece of advice you’d give our clients?

Share your stories! We predominantly work with purpose-led organisations, many of which are charities, and all of which are doing incredible work. Because of this, they have the most inspiring stories which immediately gives them an edge over more corporate organisations, meaning they can cut through a lot of the noise on social media and share something good. People love stories, especially good news stories, and charities have an abundance of them — so they shouldn’t hesitate to share these on social media.

What purpose-led campaign in recent years has resonated with you most?

Bloody Good Period are a charity providing menstrual products for refugees, asylum seekers and those who can’t afford them, as well as shedding light on period poverty. They do some great campaigning, and in particular have a really engagingInstagram account full of amazing illustrations and user generated content which I highly recommend checking out!

Personally, what’s your favourite social media platform & why?

That would have to be Instagram. I particularly love Instagram Stories — they’re only available for 24 hours so you don’t need to think too much about what you’re posting. They can be quick and unpolished but give a nice little insight into what people are up to! I have family and friends that live overseas and it’s a great way for me to be able to keep up with them, and vice versa (although it’s basically just me spamming them with clips of my one-year old babbling away).

What’s the last TV show you’ve binged?

Atlanta — it’s addictive and strikes the perfect balance between humour, seriousness, and emotions, with a dash of eccentricity thrown in. Donald Glover is very clever, and I challenge anyone not to love it!

What 4 pieces of pop culture would you take with you to a desert island?

Film: True Romance. It has it all — great music, great outfits, drama, romance, it’ll make you laugh, it’ll make you cry.

TV Series: Friends — it’s a very guilty pleasure, super easy watching, and acts as a comfort blanket when I’m feeling run down or need cheered up a bit. I grew up watching it and can watch the same episodes over and over, and there’s a lot of them, so depending how long I’m on the island at least I know I’ll be entertained!

Album: Portraits by Maribou State — perfect tunes to be stuck on an island with, easy listening and hard to get tired of!

Book: My Idea of Fun by Will Self — it’s absurd, brilliant, hilarious and a firm favourite of mine.

We’d like to thank Hannah for her time. Please feel free to connect with her on LinkedIn or Twitter. Next week we’ll be talking to our Community Manager, Angharad Francis!
