“Meet the Social Misfits Squad” is our ongoing interview series where we sit down with members of the Misfits family to chat about their work, passions and backgrounds.

This week, we caught up with the newest member of our squad, Rorie Clarke, who has been with us since January this year. Rorie is Social Misfits’ Junior Community Manager, meaning that it’s his job to run Social Misfits Media’s social channels and assist our team of Community Managers. It’s also his responsibility to create fantastic content like our #MeetTheSquad blog series…

What’s a typical day at SMM for you?

My days are quite varied — usually I’ll be doing anything from monitoring the SMM social channels to assisting the Community Managers with their day to day. It’s also common to find me working with Felicity (our designer) to plan content for the upcoming weeks.

What’s the most surprising thing you’ve found from working at SMM?

This is my first role where I’m seeing the work that charities are doing day to day, and I’m surprised with how in tune they are with the current digital climate. From my previous roles I always assumed that those in the commercial sectors would be ahead of the game, but even in the last few months I’ve found that charities and non-profits are just as switched on.

What’s the one piece of advice you’d give our clients?

Have a goal in mind and always be open minded before you start compiling your social media plans. Once you start your campaign, try to be as flexible as possible to cater for any mishaps and you’re more likely to achieve the goal you originally set out.

What purpose-led campaign in recent years has resonated with you most?

#HiddenAbuse from Solace Women’s Aid — As well as being a very relevant and current issue in today’s society, the way the campaign used Twitter’s features to generate engagement was very simple, unique and original. At first glance it looks like an average tweet, but very cleverly there is a hidden message behind it that conveys a hard-hitting message about domestic abuse.

Personally, what’s your favourite social media platform & why?

Instagram Stories — I’m naturally quite a curious person, and Stories offer you a little window into what other people or organisations are up to!

What’s the last TV show you’ve binged?

Joe Exotic, The Tiger King — Hands down one of the weirdest and most dramatic documentaries I’ve ever watched. Carole Baskin takes ‘crazy cat lady’ to a new level.

What 4 pieces of pop culture would you take with you to a desert island? (1 x film, 1 x tv series, 1 x album, 1 x book)

Film: Inglorious Basterds — Watched it countless times and still never gets old. Personally, I think it’s Tarantino’s finest work.

TV Series: Sopranos — In my opinion, it’s the best TV show of all time. It’s funny, dramatic and long-lasting, which is exactly what I’d want if I’m stranded on a desert island.

Album: Moby, Play: It’s not my favourite album of all time, but each song on the album has great desert island connotations. Mainly because of a scene in Danny Boyle’s ‘The Beach.’

Book: Scar Tissue by Anthony Kiedis — It’s a book I’ve read a lot, and each time it surprises me how many twists and turns can happen in someone’s life.

We’d like to thank Rorie for his time. Please feel free to connect with Rorie on his LinkedIn profile. Next week, we’ll be talking to our Director over in the USA, Erin Longhurst!
