Immigration is something I definitely know a bit about, seeing as my entire family is full of immigrants, one way or the other, I have some relationship with immigration. The entirety of my mom’s side has immigrated from Nigeria and has become naturalized. (I’ve got like 10 aunts and uncles on my mom’s side alone. Crazy I know.) My dad’s side has a ton of family who haven’t fully naturalized, as the amount of time that has passed has not reached its 5 year qualification process. Yet, They have all become very successful, and could say they are living their American dream. (if that phrase wasn’t super outdated and kinda case by case)

So it was quite interesting to me four years ago watching Ex-president Donald Trump rag so heavily on immigration, be it legal or illegal. My memory jogged after reading Greg Grandin’s American Extremism Has Always Flowed From The Border. “The United States was made by its frontier. Today it is being unmade by its border. In his recent national address aimed at building public support for a border wall, Donald Trump called the current moment ‘a crisis of the heart and a crisis of the soul.’”

Immigration for some people is seen as this absolutely terrible horrible thing that will ruin all of America. The fear of losing jobs or having to work alongside immigrants simply makes no sense to me. Are we not a country literally made by immigrants??? I know for sure my family is nothing to be scared of (half of them are doctors). I think some of it ties into the replacement theory that the buffalo shooter had written about in his 140+ page manifesto. For some reason there is a huge fear of white’s being replaced as the majority in society.

I think they just gotta get over it, fr. It’s not that big of a deal.

There has always consistently been a fear of immigration (Irishmen, Italians…) in our society. Where do you think those fears usually originate from? Is it the fear of being replaced, or losing “culture”?
