Throughout elementary and middle school I never really heard about immigration or the tough time of immigrating towards the US. Once I got to high school I joined the soccer team and while on that team I became close friends with a lot of students that had immigrated from Mexico to the US. I became close with these students and we became friends. Over time they would make jokes about immigration and the border and then one day I just asked what it was really like, what the process was like. And they had nothing good to say about the process, much like everyone else who has ever immigrated to the US. They talked about how slow, painstaking the situation was and then I asked was it all worth it. This answer had a split answer. One of the friends was happy he came and the other friend really did not care. In my eyes I always thought the US must have much better conditions than other countries, otherwise, why would so many people endure the trek to come here. But it was clear that my thought was wrong, my friend spoke highly of Mexico and the area he was in, he missed friends from his home and liked his town. The other friend did not like the city he was in and said he would not go back. I think this just goes to show that a lot of opinions are just based on experiences that people have faced. The one other thing I vividly remember was how they talked about the testing to come here. In my opinion a test does not show how much a person wants or belongs in a country, I don’t believe testing serves any real purpose.
