Facebook removes, then re-adds, the ability to change link previews for publishers

Last week, everyone in social freaked out because Facebook suddenly stopped allowing publishers to change link previews. The reason was to prevent fake news sites from spreading content through amplified headlines.

But, obviously, it caused publishers quite some inconvenience, as social media managers often have to amend headlines.

In the most recent update to this saga, Facebook has decided to partly reverse their decision. It says…

We know media Pages use this feature daily to customize and post high volumes of links they own. Pages eligible for this tool will see a new section in their Page’s Publishing Tools called “Link Ownership.”

Publisher pages will now be able to apply for exemption — which should allow them to edit headlines and cover images again. The deadline to apply for this is 12th September 2017.
