Quit multitasking and eliminate distractions

If you’ve clicked on this blog we can already assume you’re one of those ‘too busy’ types of people. Realistically, those people are everyone these days. In fact, if you’re not constantly busy 24/7, you’re an outcast.

People who have space to do the things they love are revered for having something we don’t … ‘time’. But it’s a one liner that seems to get thrown around way too often: “I’m too busy”. Ask yourself how many times you have said that in the last four weeks. Too busy to see your friends, too busy to clean the house, too busy to exercise … just. too. busy.

The truth is, you’re not too busy, you just don’t know how to prioritise your life. We all have the same 24 hours a day - it’s how we split our time and energy that makes all the difference.

If you’re someone who’s just “too busy”, stop what you’re doing right now, hold your attention for five minutes and check out these three blogs … for your own sake.

Step 1. Prioritise what’s truly important

The first step to free yourself of the “I’m too busy” mindset is prioritising your life and work.

“If you don’t prioritize your life, someone else will.” — Greg McKeown,

If you feel like your work-life balance is out of whack then it may be time for a reboot. To do this you’ll need to sync your schedule back up with your values and check if what you’re spending most of your time on are things that actually matter.

Check out this blog to learn how to practice being present, design your ideal week, get some accountability and consider your true calling.

Step 2: Quit trying to multitask

Secondly, you need to stop multitasking. These days we’re pressured to feel like we need to be “doing” something at all times, or sometimes even up to three things in one single moment.

The truth is you’re not multitasking, you’re just switching focus, and every time you switch your focus, it takes up to nine minutes to refocus on the original task.

This whole process is a waste of time, it can increase the rate of errors we make and it’s also making us sad and restless.

If you’re one of those people who constantly feels the urge to pick up the phone every five minutes, then you might be addicted to multitasking, and you NEED to read this blog.

Step 3: Just do the thing

Once you’ve worked through the first two steps your mind should be clear and focused on just doing the thing you’re supposed to actually get done, no matter what that thing is.

From your grand life purpose to the most mundane of tasks, this guide can ultimately walk you through what it takes to get to Done.

Learn how to identify the task at hand, define what will classify that thing as ‘done’, how to start and how to stay on track.

“The secret of getting ahead is getting started.” — Mark Twain
