Back in May, SocialRank shared an article using our granular audience data to highlight President Trump’s sudden surge in followers, diving further into exactly who the 30.6M accounts were.

What we discovered was an outstanding fraction of his incoming followers had been egg accounts (i.e. accounts with no profile photo), commonly discovered to be fake/bot accounts.

Less than 3 months have passed and the Donald’s followers have increased yet again, increasing his following by 5.5 million, growing his following to a 35.8 as of August 14th, the most recent date @realDonaldTrump has run in the system. Out of the most recent followers, 2.4 million are egg accounts.

Yet again, over half of the Donald’s new following seems to be ultimately inactive. Out of the 11.5 egg accounts following the President, 6.3 million have never posted a Tweet (8.6 million total inactive profiles).

The trouble with bots and inactive accounts are the illusion of growth when looking at the macro data. With a large number of eggs, it becomes difficult to organize the true size of a following.
