The Glass Speaker
Sony will be releasing a glass speaker that looks more like a nice decorative lamp than a speaker in the U.S this May! According to Miles (2019) “looking more like an elaborate little table lamp than a speaker, the device is actually both a light and a high-res audio compatible speaker, with Sony hiding the speaker elements into the clever design.” The light, “which is a small LED, has 32 levels of brightness and can be set to flicker like a candle too” (Miles, 2019). One of the best part of this glass speaker is that “because of its circular design, it means you can put the speaker in the center of the table and music will fire out in 360 degrees” (Miles, 2019).
Sony created this device to encourage people to come together and have the speaker be the center of that, whether it be at a dinner party or a small get- together outside. There is also the capability to “connect the speaker to your Wi-Fi and stream Spotify Playlists straight to the speaker without needed to touch your phone” (Miles, 2019). On Sony.com they do a great job of explaining the device and what it does by saying “set your world alight with ambience and transform the space around you with the Glass Sound Speaker. Explore new moods to find the perfect atmosphere for any get-together” (https://www.sony.com/electronics/wireless-speakers/lspx-s1).
I think the Glass Speaker is a genius idea that puts together the important concept of bringing people together and music. There is no better way to get people to enjoy each other’s company than with a shared love for music and the right lighting. I think with this technology it is possible to bring people together rather than everyone being on their own device in their own space. The only problem is the price. The price listed on Sony’s website is $799.00. This is a very steep price that most people will not be able to afford. Despite the price, a lot of technologies today isolate people even more than we already seem to be, but Sony is changing that by merging light and sound to bring people together. I think this technology is one that we need in our world today because we all need a little good company and good music sometimes.
