SoCo Spotlight: Hafiz, Standing at the Crossroad of Traditional Social Events and Modern Social Networking

Being a 31 year-old men, Hafiz comes from Malaysia. He works as a visit officer for collector in the bank. He describes himself as a nearly non-social life before. “I am a married man, I am busy with my work on weekdays, so on weekends, social life means hanging out with my family or friends. But things change with the development of social networking…”
Being asked what would you like to do on weekends. “I love sports, fishing, football. I am already married, I am not a person into party anymore. Something good for health is more suitable for my age.” Traditional social activities actually bring people out to meet others face by face. “When you talk to people face by face, you feel you are not lonely…”
However, things change in recent years. Especially with the development of Internet in the 21st century, social forms have changed fundamentally. Currently, social activities have transformed from the physical forms to virtual forms. More and more people choose to rather sit in front of the computer or face mobile phones rather than hanging out with friends.
“What brings about this situation, you think?”
“Too tired.” Hafiz told us. “People become busier and busier. More and more work, but less and less social time. I am tired on weekdays. The only thing I want to do is to relax at home. I don’t have so much energy to waste on meaningless things.” In fact, nearly every one feels that the fast-pace of modern life leads us to a situation where we feel almost exhausted.
“What is more. We are growing, and every year we will meet numerous new strangers. There are more and more friends, but less and less true friend. Those who accompany you in your childhood may not have common topic anymore. So you need to meet new guys to find those who share the common interests and topics with you at this moment.” Now, social networking will play its roles in this new type of social activities. You don’t need to go out to meet new people. Internet will offer us the opportunities to look for more people who have the same interest with us through searching engines, chatting groups, forums. There are more and more new social networking channels, such as the famous social platforms Facebook and Twitter. Currently, even more social networking forms emerge, such as video chatting, live broadcast…
Internet social life brings us more colorful entertainment. You meet more new guys who are geographically far away from you, maybe on the other side of the earth, but you two share the same interest, then you become friends. “Also, social networking also saves time. We are so busy that we don’t have so much time to gossip much with someone before we are familiar with that guy. That means social networking could be used as a filter to help us choose friends.”
