Global Teachers as Global Learners — and Students as Published Researchers

The iPGCE and MA Education, Teaching and Learning are two fully-online programmes in the School of Education. They are typically taken by those teaching in the international sector, who wish to broaden their pedagogical knowledge and understanding. Students work all over the world, from Myanmar to Mauritius, from Belgium to Bermuda. The programme is highly collaborative, encouraging students to engage with and challenge each others’ constructs of teaching and learning. We are aware that our students are busy, typically juggling a full teaching load, and often a family, on top of their studies, so we want to make sure that the programme is as applied as possible. As such, students are encouraged to use their research project to explore an aspect or issue directly linked to their work, which has led to our students driving change all over the world. Sometimes, additional opportunities become available to get involved in, too, and we are very happy and proud to share the result of one of these. In late 2017, the London Review of Education put out a call for papers, for a special issue journal on Multiculturalism and Interculturalism in Education. Sabine Little, the programme director, forwarded this call to all students. Together with four highly motivated students from the 2017–18 cohort — Michelle Golledge, Hina Agarwalla, Ben Griffiths and Danny McCamlie — they worked on a narrative study, exploring their own and their fellow students’ interpretations of what it means to be a ‘globally mobile teacher’. The study has just been published, and is available to read here:
