Making “Memories” in Toronto

Dr Penny Fogg and Professor Katherine Runswick-Cole travelled to Toronto to take part in a story telling workshop as part of a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council funded project led by Dr Patty Douglas (Brandon University) Re-Storying Autism.

Over a three day workshop, Penny and Katherine worked together to create a short film in which they explore the ways in which (m)others of disabled children are made ‘mad’ in the special education system.

Penny said: “ this was a great opportunity to work alongside others interested in changing how people who have attracted, or claimed, the label of autism are understood and treated in the education system. Making the film allowed us to express some important ideas in a way that we hope will move people and help them to understand at a deeper level. We’re looking forward to including our film in our teaching and sharing it in educational settings and with other ‘mad’ mothers.”
