Sri Lankan software engineering industry has a variety of fields requiring different skill sets. Each project team will have various people coming together to develop and ship the application. I will discuss on some of the major fields which newcomers should be aware of.
Role/Responsibility- Develop and design software solutions.
Most of the Sri Lankan companies usually look for full stack developers, although there is recent trending demand for front end & back end engineers as well as mobile developers.
During recent times, there has been an increasing demand for embedded systems developers who work on IoT and related fields.
Ideally, a software engineer should be able to work on any technology to solve required tasks.
User Interface/User experience engineers
Roles/Responsibility- Illustrating design ideas using storyboards, process flows and sitemaps. Also, help software engineers in styling front-end, usually work with styling the applications.
Almost all projects have a UI/UX engineer who is responsible for the look and feel of the application.
Role/Responsibility- Testing applications extensively before releasing.
There is both manual and automated testing of applications. Many Sri Lankan companies are moving towards automated testing rather than just manual testing of the applications, hence there is more demand for QA who are skilled in automated testing.
Roles/Responsibilities- They responsible for handling and protecting IT infrastructure, edge devices, networks, and data.
Almost all software companies have at least one IT supports person who is responsible for the hardware and infrastructure. There is a raising trend for cyber security engineers as well, who are responsible for preventing data breaches and monitoring and reacting to attacks.
Roles/Responsibilities- They responsible for handling expectations of all project stakeholders including customers, developers and quality assurance and delivering project as expected.
Most software engineering companies have a project managers, however some companies like 99x Technologies don’t, and companies like WSO2 has Accounts managers, performing a simplified version of project manager role.
Roles/Responsibilities- They analyses an organisation or business domain and documents its business or processes or systems, and figures where the technology should fit in.
Most Sri Lankan companies have a Business analyst in their team to help out with the business domain and how certain process work. In some startup companies, Project Managers take the role of Business analyst as well.
Role/Responsibilities- Work closely with business stakeholders to understand their goals and determine how data can be used to achieve those goals. Usually the works includes having predictive models helping business decision making.
Sri Lankan companies like Zone24x7 are moving towards having positions for data science and machine learning roles. Also some companies which have access to large amounts of data Axita Digital Labs, have positions for Data Engineers.
As mentioned earlier, a project team consists of all of the above people coming together to help deliver a product.
