Much like traveling to a foreign country, you can pick your dream destination and aspire to taking a trek, but if you don’t buy a ticket and pack your bag, you’re never going to get there.

We’ve all been that person dreaming of a trip. We spend our days googling “cool sh*t to do in [insert-paradise-place-I’ve-been-dreaming-of]” and creeping pictures of that Facebook acquaintance who was there last year. And when we go from just dreaming to realizing we’ve finally got the money in the bank to start thinking seriously about this, we start preparing. Think about it — if you had a desire to travel around the world, what would you do first? Seek out other people who have traveled and ask about their experiences? Study maps to figure out where you want to go? Search the web to learn what the weather is like, what the people are like, what language they speak, and what vaccinations you’ll need? Likely all of the above. Heck, you can probably even find a packing list online that tells you how many pairs of socks to bring.

And that’s all before you drop money on a ticket, let alone get on a plane.

So why all this upfront work? Well, a well-packed backpack and a clear vision helps each of us (to varying degrees) feel prepared — and confident — as we board a plane, say good-bye to the familiar and step into the scary unknown that is a new country.
