A Letter to SoMaeks
What is SojuDAO?
To understand what SojuDAO is, or rather what it has become, it’s important to know its origins. In the winter of 2022, during the depths of the bear market, I was building in Korea, an ecosystem full of passion and promise. As someone from the US, Korea was very new to me.
But something was missing. Crypto’s roots lie in community. It took a communal effort to turn Bitcoin from a whitepaper into a potential ETF (under the world’s largest asset manager). And I had a problem to solve. As a foreigner, it took some adjustment to get around Korea: where to eat, how to use public transport, who to know, and even where to grab a drink. So, I started a group chat called Crypto Soju with a few friends I had made during my time working in Korea. It was my go-to resource for all things Korean.
Then I thought: “I’m sure there are others just like me who could use this.” The people who helped build SojuDAO into what it is today are the same people I reached out to in November 2022: Alex, Prince, Cherry, Wilhelm, Lily. You may have seen them around. They’re the best. Along the way, we’ve been fortunate to have others help us grow, like Josh, Lisa, and our earliest supporters like Frutti Dino and NFT Kartel, among others.
And now, we’ve grown. Some have found new cities to call home, and some have found roles at top web3 companies.
And now it’s time for SojuDAO to grow beyond its roots.
Our Manifesto reads: “SojuDAO is a digital lifestyle and social DAO committed to expanding Korea’s Web3 ecosystem. SojuDAO is a collective of Web3 enthusiasts aiming to connect people in the ins and outs of Web3 spaces. We aim to create physical and digital hubs for Web3 Founders, Builders, Investors, and Friends based in South Korea to CONNECT & PLAY.”
And it will remain the same. But to further push the SojuDAO Manifesto, we must grow beyond our roots.
Over the last year, we’ve had the pleasure of hosting over 10 events, participating as cohosts in dozens more, and growing our community to over 700 individuals across Korea, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, Dubai, and even Europe — all in a bear market.
What makes SojuDAO special is that we never strayed too far from our core.
"What is SojuDAO?" is a question I've received a lot. And what's amazing about that is, everyone can create their own answer to what SojuDAO means to them.
For me, SojuDAO is a web3 home. A place where I can be myself and build valuable relationships. A place where other like-minded individuals can connect and foster their own relationships.
The reason that SojuDAO is a globally recognized name, is only because of its community.
