Welcome!

I’d like to introduce you to the Solaria Labs blog, which we will use to share updates about how we work, the cool things we are building, and our take on emerging trends and tech!

First, a little about us. Solaria Labs is a team of developers, designers, data scientists, researchers, and venture managers building game-changing new products for Liberty Mutual. Emerging trends like autonomous vehicles, connected living, and the sharing economy are changing the way people view their need for mobility and shelter. We look for new opportunities in those areas to disrupt our own industry and to diversify our products beyond insurance. We focus on consumer need for everything we do and continuously test the appeal of our products. I think of us as a hybrid of an innovation lab and startup incubator: when successful, we will spin off new companies or create new lines of business within Liberty Mutual. We’ve already launched a few products and one company since we started, which you can check out here, here, and here!

Now, that’s not all we do: we also focus on applying emerging technologies like machine learning to improve our insurance business. As part of a Fortune 100 company, we have a lot of data to work with and opportunities to improve the lives of thousands of employees and hundreds of thousands of customers. We’ve starting building prototypes and will partner with business and IT teams within the company to deploy the technology. Finally, we also work to foster a culture of innovation within Liberty Mutual; we host a global staff rotation program and we run company-wide initiatives that enable employees to test our products and submit new ideas.

We have been building a team of innovators who are passionate about technology and are entrepreneurial, who aren’t afraid to experiment with the latest open source technologies and build new products from scratch. We’re still growing fast, looking for like-minded people to join our lab in Boston’s Back Bay. I personally joined Liberty Mutual in 2016, after a decade of leading R&D projects for DARPA and other Gov’t research labs. It was a very cool job, but I could not refuse the opportunity to be a part of Solaria Labs: our mission is ambitious and our opportunities are unlimited.
