A Christian Response to Fascism: Part 10 of 16 — Trump’s National Address
If you’re new to this series, I’m a pastor countering aspects of fascism with Christian theological critique.
While I’m not convinced Trump is [yet] a full-blown fascist, he is inarguably a populist with authoritarian leanings pulling from the fascist playbook. In this post we’ll talk about a tenth aspect of facism — the demonizing of journalists and usage of propaganda to create an alternate reality — and a Christian response to this feature, as per the series norm. But, because it’s timely, I’ll also address Trump’s national address scheduled for tonight, where he’s gearing up to declare a state of emergency re: our southern border to justify spending on a wall. To do that, we’ll pull our lens back a bit to weave in some other aspects of fascism about which I’ve already written.
Tonight at 9pm EST, Trump will hold his first ever primetime televised address from the Oval Office. The address is expected to be aired on NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS, Fox broadcast network, Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC. Trump called it to “address the nation on the humanitarian and national security crisis on our southern border,” and, if reports are correct, to declare a national state of emergency that would allow him to begin work on his proposed $5.2 billion wall.
