Giving back to the College of Charleston, our alma mater
We’ve been pleased to work with the College of Charleston on a variety of projects, including building the website for the Bully Pulpit Series (and they just wrapped up a monster election year). We owe the College much of our success: after all, without CofC, the Annex partners wouldn’t have met.
It starts with a meme
When one of the famous Cistern Yard oaks unexpectedly fell earlier this year, well, partner Geoff Yost couldn’t help poking fun.
But that wasn’t all he did.
With thousands of impressions and engagements on that tweet, Geoff realized how important those trees and that place is to the CofC community. Sensing an opportunity, Geoff made sure the wood was preserved so that the College could give new life to the tree in the form of collectible art. Behind the scenes, he connected the College to his friend and fellow alumnus Katie Kozar Thompson, a Charleston-area woodworker. Exactly what will be made? Well, that’s still under wraps. But all of the proceeds are going to scholarships.
College of Charleston Magazine spoke with Geoff about the importance of the Cistern and its grove of oaks.
“Regardless of how it’s packaged, we want the significance to be in the wood, so that there’s meaning there for everyone. Everyone has their own memories under those trees, and the stories are very personal to the individual. This is an opportunity to root out those stories and honor them, whatever they may be.”

That’s a creative idea from Annex that is going to make a huge difference in the lives of so many students. So, this tree fell and people are definitely going to hear about it.
