5 Themes About Solutions Journalism on Twitter

In a 14-day period, we examined Twitter conversations around #SolutionsJournalism. After examining hundreds of original tweets, reoccurring themes included comments about the practice and its reach.

1. Highlighting the Solutions Journalism Practice

The Solution Journalism Network’s story tracker has more than 7,000 solution-oriented stories produced by more than 900 news outlets in more than 150 countries. It even categorizes the vetted stories by issue, byline and success factor.

The solutions journalism approach is resonating with Twitter users. They are highlighting stories not found in the Story Tracker demonstrating the reach of solutions journalism.

Twitter users use the platform to endorse the approach by sharing how this journalistic approach works and why it should be adopted.

By sharing personal experiences and results of solutions journalism with the Twitterverse, local journalists are highlighting why they do solutions journalism and the potential value and impact of this approach for their local community and the journalism profession.

2. Solutions Journalism Training

Twitter users also commented on solutions journalism training opportunities for the journalistic community. In fact, there were approximately 200 tweets related to solutions journalism training across the world from October 22nd, 2019 to November 5th, 2019. Journalists were promoting and live tweeting conferences, while also sharing solutions journalism tips on their own personal platforms.

3. LEDE Fellowship

During the two week time period, many people tweeted about how the Solutions Journalism Network awarded 21 journalists with a fellowship.

After announcing the fellows, there was an outpouring of excitement from the journalists who were awarded the fellowship.

That excitement was paired with community support of the fellows and highlighting the work the fellows would be doing thanks to that opportunity.

4. Topic Requests for Solutions Journalism

Among the success stories and overall education efforts highlighted on Twitter, there were also some critiques. Most posts were positive in nature, but one reoccurring theme persisted.

People wanted more solution-based stories on the topic of climate change.

5. This Movement is Global

The Solutions Journalism Story Tracker states there are thousands of vetted stories from more 150 countries — and their Twitter audience reflects this global reach.

There were tweets came from everywhere. From Bulgaria to London, from London to Johannesburg and from Johannesburg to the Bronx.

By taking a look at all of the unique locations produced during these two weeks, solutions journalism’s influence is widespread. By capitalizing off of this international presence on social media, solutions journalism leaders can encourage it to continue to grow.
