The prevalence of diabetes is on the rise around the world, and Korea is no exception. Diabetes is a common chronic disease, but it also a major cause of blindness, chronic kidney disease, coronary heart disease, and stroke. This is why it is one of the world’s leading causes of death. The increasing prevalence of this disease is a heavy burden for both patients and society.

2016 data provided by the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) shows that the prevalence of diabetes in Korean adults aged ≥30 years was 13.7%, which is estimated to be about 4.8 million adults. The number of adults living with diabetes in Korea has followed global trends, increasing over the last 15 years by 5.1%, rising from 8.6% in 2001 to 13.7% in 2016.

Of even greater concern is the fact that the estimated population with impaired fasting glucose (IFG), a type of prediabetes, stands at about 8.3 million. This figure leads to a prediction that the number of adults living with diabetes will increase further in the future. This is because IFG is viewed as a high-risk category for the future development of diabetes. Approximately 25% of patients with IFG and impaired glucose tolerance progress to diabetes over an observation period of 3 to 5 years.

One goal behind Care.Wallet is to decrease the rate of diabetes around the world. Inside Care.Wallet, patients can find their prescriptions, appointments, and the How Are You Feeling Today (HAYFT) Care.Card. With the HAYFT Care.Card, doctors can easily track a patient’s condition, their blood sugar levels, and give care recommendations according to this data. Care.Wallet is synchronized with family or friends into a Care.Circle, so that patients’ families can always stay up to date on their diabetes.
