NEW YORK — In the wake of devastating news from a nation thousands of miles away, Americans were comforted by the reminder that their country isn’t the only place where terrible things happen. “With all of the atrocious things that have happened in the U.S. over the past few months I was starting to think that we were alone in our strife, but thankfully this terrible event happened elsewhere and showed me that’s not true at all,” said American Veronica Rowe, adding that she’s grateful to live in such an interconnected world where it’s very easy to hear about other peoples’ miseries. “Lots of terrible things happening around the world isn’t great, but knowing that they’re not only happening here is. I think Americans can be so narrow-minded sometimes, only focusing on us and the multitude of awful things that happen here on a daily basis. What we really need is a perspective change, we need to open our eyes and realize that we’re a small piece of a planet containing eight billion people where terrible, truly terrible things happen every single day. Knowing that’s the case will make us feel less stressed, more connected, and just as unsure about how to change anything for anyone anywhere.” Rowe went on to say that the worse the “terrible things” are, the better she feels about being an American.
