Ideas are living things. They are pure potential. Ideas travel from place to place, from mind to mind. They cascade and evolve. Sometimes they take root and sprout, other times they fly off into the unknown.

I read a book recently about something called Complexity Theory. There’s no easy way to sum it up, but it’s the kind of book that plants seeds in your mind that will sprout days/weeks/months later.

In the book, there’s a part about ants and how they randomly form complex systems when they amass numbers. Ants wandering around alone aren’t part of a larger system until they group together to form a colony. When they do, they suddenly assume certain roles and perform different tasks for the colony as a whole. Complicated and organized systems emerge out of apparent chaos.

If you look closely, whole things become many small things grouped together. And if you zoom out far enough, the nature of everything changes. Things stop being many separate things to become one thing. We stop being cells and become beings. Groups of humans become a people, a culture, a society — a living, breathing organism all on its own.
