I love my job, even though I also hate it sometimes.

Yesterday, a life-changing event happened. Something that I’ll probably remember for the rest of my life.

You see, being a doctor means you get to deal with A LOT of people, and I truly mean a lot of them. Sometimes these interactions are pretty sh*tty. I get to deal with the worst personality of people.

As I’ve mentioned in my previous article, during the first part of my residency I was assigned to the pediatric department. This means I deal with a lot of sick kids, and with sick kids, there’s one thing that comes hand in hand, and that’s worried parents.

Worried parents are the worst because of one simple reason. They act more childish than their kids do.

As I was about to end my 11-hour shift, the last case of the day came from the ER. There was an immigrant mother with three kids who didn’t speak the language. What better way to end a stressful day, than a patient with whom I can’t communicate with…

The kid suffered from a congenital disorder called a urachal fistula. Basically, his urinary bladder was connected to his umbilicus and pee was coming out of it. Hard, I know.
