Kid Koala is a Canadian and world-renowned scratch DJ, music producer, and award winning graphic novelist. His skill set is decidedly a traditional one but his signature move, adjusting the pitch of individual notes by hand in order to warp them, theremin-like sounds out of records. He extends the metaphor of turntable-as-instrument further than just about any other DJ has managed. In the song “Drunk Trumpet,” Kid Koala uses this method with a trumpet note to simulate a drunken trumpet player, interspersing drunken vocals to complete the effect. Genius!
