Legend says that 4AD chief Ivo Watts-Russell listened to Red House Painters’ demo cassette, and immediately fell in love with them. And their debut album, Down Colorful Hill, actually contains those demo materials, slightly remixed. With a minimal sound that developed into darker and more experimental atmospheres for coming back again to their unornamented brand, Red House Painters recorded a series of highly emotional, heart-breaking slowcore-alternative rock albums from 1992 to their disbandment in 2001. Have you ever heard a Shock me Kiss’s cover of such a tender beauty?
Luckily for our compulsive engagement in music, vocalist and guitarist Mark Kozelek (who probably you saw acting in Cameron Crowe’s movie Almost Famous) later founded Sun Kil Moon. But that’s another story.
