Tiago Bettencourt, from Portugal with love

Portugal is known for producing Port wine more than music. Beyond fado icons, few bands’ names will come to your mind (Moonspell and…?). Do not forget: historically, it’s hard to talk about a Portuguese rock-pop music scene until 1974, when the dictatorship collapsed and artistic freedom was little by little recovered, after years of political oppression. And today, there are certainly some Lusitanian talented musicians that should be recognized abroad, even if they still haven’t been yet. One name? Tiago Bettencourt, a singer-songwriter based in Lisbon, warmly acclaimed in his country. Heartfelt songs, sometimes thoughtful sometimes light-hearted, accessible even to those that lack of a traditional Portuguese musical background. Five albums up to now, plus two with his band Toranja, refined and soft, or gentle and fresh. Different levels of sweetness…like a fortified wine!

(Dedicated to all of my big-hearted friends met in Bragança)
