How badly this song is begging you to dissect it and extract inspiration.

The songoftheweek this week is, “Thunder”, by Imagine Dragons, from their latest grammy-nominated album Evolve.

The lyrics of this song ( and the video too ) are particularly interesting. They’re inspirational. And in the most simplest form of poetry though. Let’s dive right in.

Just a young gun with a quick fuse
I was uptight, wanna let loose
I was dreaming of bigger things
And wanna leave my old life behind

When I was younger, I was short tempered & uptight. How I dreamt of making it big in life & leaving all the shit behind.

Not a yessir, not a follower
Fit the box, fit the mold
Have a seat in the foyer, take a number

I’m not a “Yes Sir” fella or someone who blindly follows someone else. I’m the circle of light that’s not made to fix in a box, or not even meant to be contained in it. And I’m not subscribing to any prescriptions that require me to buy propaganda & that too wait in a fucking queue for that!

I was lightning before the thunder.

I’m the demo to what is gonna come next. I am tomorrow. I’m Thunder.

What he very clearly describes himself in his early days, a sort of a person who’s always trying & not getting anywhere with it. And how that person is so different from what that person is going to be tomorrow. His earlier days, are the “lightning” before the thunder.

And right here, is the point that strikes me the most. He sees himself as a better version of himself, right from the place where he is currently.

Even while being in a ditch, he’s able to appreciate and work towards being a better version of himself. And that’s honestly what we all need to remember all the time.

We’re all lightning, before the thunder.

We’re supposed to trust in ourselves and invest with whole heart and mind, what we have. Give ourselves everything. And isn’t the self-investment the most long lasting investment of all ? And the one that will yield the most worth for you?

Kids were laughing in my classes
While I was scheming for the masses
Who do you think you are?
Dreaming ‘bout being a big star
They say you’re basic, they say you’re easy
You’re always riding in the backseat

My peers are telling me that I’m no good. They laugh at me and my dreams and my aspirations. They think I can’t be a successful person. They say I don’t excel anywhere. They mock my life.

Now I’m smiling from the stage
While you were clapping in the nose bleeds

And now, when I’m successful, I can look at them in the eye and tell them I’m worth everything I invested into. My success makes them giddy. They’re jealous of me now.

Thunder, feel the thunder
Lightning then the thunder, thunder

Don’t stop believing in yourself today. Your tomorrow needs you.

Be the lightning, be the thunder.

THUNDER. THUNDER.
