Enter Sandman is a classic hard rock song by the American heavy metal band Metallica. It was released as the lead single from their self-titled fifth studio album in 1991. The song has become one of the band’s most popular and recognizable songs and is often used as a concert opener.

Lead singer and guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich wrote the song. It was inspired by a dream Ulrich had about a child being sent to bed with the fear of a monster coming to get him. The song’s title references the traditional English lullaby “Hush Little Baby.”

The song begins with a slow, ominous guitar riff, followed by a heavy drum beat. Hetfield’s vocals come in shortly after, singing the lyrics.

Say your prayers, little one, don’t forget my son, to include everyone

The song then builds to a powerful chorus, with Hetfield singing

“Enter Sandman, take my hand, take me away to never never land”

The song has become a staple of Metallica’s live shows and is often used as an opener. Numerous other bands, including Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and Slipknot have covered it. It has also been featured in numerous films and television shows, including The Simpsons, South Park, and The Big Lebowski.
