12 Steps for Sonnet Writers?

I think I’m through with sonnets, or they with me,
Their twisting rhythms, often senseless rhymes.
They take me places I don’t want to be
And make me say what I don’t mean sometimes.
I’d rather write a little haiku or
Some tanka, even Fibonacci verse–
Just anything but sonnets now, for sure.
(But please no villanelles; they’re even worse!)
I want to write, but write verse that is free
Or blank, at least–just let me empty out
