Their first mistake was falling, like, in love,
except they hit the ground, a bag of bricks
lost somewhere in the miles high above
or, else, the universe is playing tricks
on children, stupid children, never learned
to wrap their hearts in bubbles or some foam,
protection — for these feelings sharply turn
and then their shieldless hearts are free to roam
wherever else they would, so vulnerable
