The crossword on the crosstown, every eve,
Same time, same seat, the old rhythmic routine,
From daily tedium there’s no reprieve,
She travels to and from, unheard, unseen.
Night shift, cube farm, fluorescent overhead,
Coworkers nod politely as they pass,
Then bury their heads in their phones instead,
Disgruntled callers her true friends, alas.

Back in her basement condo, life persists —
That seed she found and planted with great care,
It might be any day now, she insists,
The sapling will break through the earthy lay’r.

The miracle comes just before nightfall —
She sighs: I won’t be childless after all.
