A new and improved scoring for Sorare

We are thrilled to announce some improvements to the way player cards score fantasy points in the weekly tournaments. The process leading to this change was greatly assisted by the wide range of feedback received from our community and potential new managers.

The new scoring was built with two goals in mind:

  • Ease the score interpretation by new users (range from 0 to 100)
  • Increase the excitement of live player performances of all positions

We believe the changes outlined below will help improve the fantasy football experience on Sorare and onboard more users. We aim to implement these changes so that the new scoring can be live on Game Week 94: between Friday 28th of August and Tuesday 1st of September.

More Football Statistics

After signing an extended deal with Opta, we’ve significantly increased the number of statistics we use to score players from 18 to 65. These additional statistics enable more granularity that ultimately translates to more realistic scoring when comparing defensive and attacking players.

   Player Nane Score
------------- --------
Goalkeeping 12
Defending 15
Possession 7
Passing 11
Attacking 13

One of our primary objectives as part of this next iteration of scoring was to more fairly score defensive midfielders relative to their attacking counterparts.

Below are the top 10 midfielders from the English Premier League based on our new scoring grids:

  Top 10 EPL Midfielders
------------------------
Rodri Hernández
Kevin De Bruyne
Declan Rice
Jack Grealish
Wilfred Ndidi
Jorginho
João Moutinho
James Maddison
Mateo Kovačić
Jordan Henderson

You will note there are now 4 defensive-minded midfielders (Rodri, Rice, Ndidi, and Jorginho) represented in this list.

45,295 player game statistics analysed

We’ve used a large data sample of games from players with more than 60 minutes spent on the pitch from the top 20 leagues in the world with an over-representation from the top 5 football leagues in the world.

The scoring was calibrated so that:

  • It falls into the 0–100 range in 99.8% of cases (if you’re out of that range, you’re either in trouble or very skilful)
  • Scores average equals 40 points for each position

Targeting 40 points as the average (instead of 50) allows the scoring to fit the distribution tail within the 0–100 range.

Below is the resulting score of distributions per position. The distribution shape is slightly different for each position. Amongst field players, Forward is the most “risky” position as it has the highest standard deviation. You should take this into consideration when choosing your team formation!

   Position Mean Median StDev
------------ ------ -------- -------
Goalkeeper 40.0 38.3 17.5
Defender 40.0 39.7 14.6
Midfielder 40.0 38.7 15.2
Forward 40.0 37.5 15.8

How are Player Scores calculated?

It’s as easy as Score = Starting Score + Game Score + Accuracy Bonus

Starting Score is a fixed number of points per position that is added so that the average score for all positions is equal to 40 points.

Game Score is computed using the game statistics and scoring grids and is the sum of stat * point per stat.

Accuracy Bonus accounts for a player’s accuracy in the passing, cross, and shooting statistics. High accuracy players will get a bonus on their passing and shooting points.

There are two important updates about scores:

  • We will now score all players coming on the pitch. If your player is a substitute who starts at the 90th minute, he’ll start with the starting score of his position.
  • For a defensive position to have a clean sheet, he needs to have played at least 60 minutes with no goals (if your defender is subbed at the 70th minute or if he comes in at the 25th minute, he gets the clean sheet bonus)

You can find all the details of the scoring calculation this spreadsheet (retained statistics, starting scores, field player scoring grid, goalkeeper scoring grid, accuracy grids, and an example).

To increase the excitement of live football games, we’ve also created some Sorare custom statistics. For defending statistics, players can now unlock bonuses based on their performance in 3 key metrics:

  • Double-Double: 2 in two of interceptions, won tackles and net duels and no triple-double
  • Triple-Double: At least 2 interceptions, won tackles and net duels and no triple-triple
  • Triple-Triple: At least 3 interceptions, won tackles and net duels

How the scores have changed

We’ve computed a list of the average score change for different players and positions so that you can have a visual understanding of the new scoring and the difference with the previous one.

Player Name Position Cur avg New avg
---------------------- ------------ --------- ---------
Odisseas Vlachodimos Goalkeeper 7.5 47.0
Marquinhos Defender 8.1 55.2
Casemiro Def. Mid. 6.3 52.9
Luis Alberto Att. Mid. 9.8 55.9
Cristian Pavón Forward 9.1 53.2
Cristiano Ronaldo Forward 15.4 61.1

This would be a very good Sorare line-up to have (when we will have PSG and Real Madrid under license!). The average scores of good players might range between 50 and 60 but it is possible to score far more points for exceptional performances.

We’ve broken down Jonathan David’s hat-trick against Bruges about a year ago in this example. He scored an impressive 91,54 points.

As Pele says “I’m constantly being asked about individuals. The only way to win is as a team. Football is not about one or two star players”.

We are confident these changes will lead to even more closely contested tournaments with the most skilled managers now being able to select winning line-ups that include players currently under-utilized in the database.

We are committed to a continuous effort of evaluating changes in order to improve the experience for all of our managers.

Good luck building your ultimate Sorare teams for the new 2020/2021 season!
